The Ornery Reports has learned that there is a movement afoot in the US Senate to demand the recall of the Mary Sheila Gall. Gall is President Bush's choice to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission and at least some Senators think it is defective.
According to a spokesperson for Senator Tom Daschle, "the Gall is volatile. It might erxplode at any time, as it did back in 1999 when it claimed fellow commissioners were trying to promote 'a federal nanny state.' The Gall also labeled other Commissioners 'a cabal' Many Senators feel that these outbursts reveal a serious design flaw."
Others, such as Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), feel the Gall is limited in its focus or vision.
"The Gall tends to see only individual products and to not take into account how people use them," according to the Clinton camp.
Whether these design flaws are sufficient to effect a Gall recall remains to be seen.
In other news from the consumer product front, Whirlpool has announced the recall of some 1.4 million dehumidifiers. This follows its discovery that, while the fires that could result from use of the units were great for drying out a room or home, they tended to leave no home or room to be dehumidified.
"The design was just a little too efficient," acknowledged a Whirlpool representative.
Also from the realm of product safety, comes word that Custom Buoyancy Inc. is recalling overpressure valves used on buoyancy control devices in scuba diving because the valves might stick open and cause divers to drown.
"Needless to say, anyone who has already drowned while using the device is exempted from the recall," said a source.
