Enron Corporation Practiced Unsafe Financial Partnerships
|
|
Enron Corporation has fiscal AIDS. Yes, Accounting Irregularities Doom Stock. As countless stockholders and former employees of the corporation have learned too late, Enron appears to have engaged in a pattern of unsafe "financial partnerships" over the past several years. Whether one or more of these "financial partners" infected Enron is presently unknown, but the results are clear. Enron stock, once trading close to $90 per share has plummeted to under $1.
Enron's fiscal doctor (auditor) Arthur Andersen, maintains that he and his company only learned too late of Enron's "financial practices", but that he then advised against such risky "business" behavior. Enron maintains that as part of its fiscal physical, it informed Andersen of these "partnerships".
Reacting to these revelations, President George W. Bush has called for a review of such "financial partnerships" with an eye to preventing future outbreaks of such corporate illness. Other national leaders, such as Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn) are looking to more direct governmental oversight and possible regulation of "financial partnerships". Neither course of action promises relief to Enron shareholders and former employees who have suffered from the effects of the corporate disease.
Curiously, Enron executives seem to have had an immunity to the disease or to somehow have avoided its ravaging effects on their fiscal health. As part of the various probes, investigators are at work trying to determine if these executives made use of the "insider trading" vaccine that is supposed to be banned.
Especially in the deregulated (read:freer) business environment of today, it is hoped that Enron's example will serve as a warning to other corporate entities against engaging in unsafe "financial partnerships".
As of this writing, it is unclear whether Enron's financial disease may have infected the Republican Party and possibly a few Democrats. Despite rumors and circumstantial evidence that the GOP has been in bed with many major energy corporations, including Enron, the party thus far is showing no symptoms of the often-fatal illness
